Firstly, what is biological ageing?
Chronological age is how long you have existed. Biological age is how old your cells are. Sometimes these two numbers are the same for people, but everyone ages at different rates. There are home blood tests available to discover what your biological age is if you are interested in learning and improving your age with measurable results. Gimmicks
There are a lot of gimmicks; we are in an age where the internet, TikTok, etc. bombards us with weird and wonderful ideas—some not so wonderful, like homemade SPF!
One of these gimmicks is IV and subcutaneous NAD+. The purpose of this post is to educate you on the basics of NAD+, what is can and can’t achieve, including its absorption.
On the market, you can purchase NAD+ home injections; however, there is no scientific data to suggest what potential harmful effects could be the outcome of a product. When injected, the molecules will sit in the interstitial space rather than be absorbed directly into the cells.
The other is IV-infused (intravenous drip) NAD+ which is absorbed directly into the blood. There are two issues here: NAD+ breaks down extremely quickly and is inherently unstable within 30 minutes of being removed from a medical freezer and almost instantly after being removed from the body. It is also worth mentioning that NAD needs to be absorbed into the cells and not the blood, as it does very little in the blood, as it needs to work with the mitochondria in our cells—the powerhouse of the cell.
As the molecule is a large one, most cells cannot uptake the molecule into the cell. What is left when the NAD+ is broken down are its precursors, which are absorbed by cells; however, it does not do what was promised, and the same benefits can be achieved from those precursors as taking a vitamin B3 supplement.
There are other not-so-great side effects such as nausea, heart palpitations, and questions again around safety. Wouldn’t you prefer a product that you don’t need to inject or sit through an unpleasant IV infusion, and something that is scientifically backed with data to prove it works?
